Album Review : Flight Brigade ‘Shaw Court Sessions’ EP

Having not long ago stumbled upon this band, I am late to the party in reviewing the self-released Shaw Court Sessions EP by Flight Brigade. It has been available as a free download from their website for over a year now and comprises of six compelling folk-rock songs.

What comes through strongest after a first listen is their knack for crafting a tune. The layered vocals and instrumentation immediately demand and hold your attention. It is music which manages to feel delicate whilst at the same time still packing a punch.

They often convey an epic quality with sweeping strings, crashing drums, and enigmatic lyrics alluding to characters and situations that are part of a bigger narrative. It is a winning formula because it compels you to return to them all the more.

There is a benchmark of quality in evidence throughout, making it difficult to single out any one song that stands above the rest. If their upcoming debut album manages to deliver on this promise, it is difficult to imagine anything but good things in Flight Brigade’s future.

[4 out of 5 stars]
