The End Of The Road
Unfortunately I have to lay The Mixtape Shed to rest as I can no longer spare the time required to do this music blog justice. I will leave the site as is by way of an archive for anyone who wants to look at past content, but there will be no further updates unfortunately.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the musicians who kindly gave their time to answer questions for this blog...

Album Review : Angus Stone 'Broken Brights'
While this solo record isn’t a far cry from the music Angus Stone already makes with his sister Julia, Broken Brights is an assured effort by a musician at the top of his game. Its hazy and laidback quality would make a perfect companion on a warm summer’s day.
The arrangements feel slightly homespun in places, but behind them lie a heartfeltness which is hard to resist. And there...

Album Review : Soul Asylum 'Delayed Reaction'
Thirty years into their careers Soul Asylum don’t really have anything left to prove to the world. Delayed Reaction may be their 10th studio album to date, but it is only their second this millennium. Yet it is very much business as usual for Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, and co.
Opener “Gravity” rocks out as if it is still 1992 while tracks like “Let’s All Kill Each...

Album Review : Alberta Cross 'Songs Of Patience'
Alberta Cross release their sophomore album this month, comprising ten roots and Southern-tinged rock anthems. And hats off to them, they make an assured stab at reaching for an epic sound. The problem is Songs Of Patience isn’t quite as great as it strives to be.
“Magnolia” is easily the best tune on the record. Its groove and layers build up to a choir vocal outro that...

Album Review : Jimmy Cliff 'Rebirth'
Rebirth is the first album from reggae legend Jimmy Cliff in eight years and finds him in fine form. Produced by punk rock icon Tim Armstrong, the songs possess a vitality that would be the envy of artists many years his younger.
Indeed the energy is so infectious on this record you’d be forgiven for briefly forgetting the social messages contained in his lyrics, such is the joy and...

Album Review : Royal Wood 'We Were Born To Glory'
We Were Born To Glory is the fourth full-length album by Canadian musician Royal Wood, a collection of thirteen polished tunes which further his reputation for crafting accessible pop music. Its MOR nature belies the fact he is accomplished at what he does.
While the record suffers at points from what feels like filler tracks, the first half offers enough memorable songs to make you return for...

Album Review : Newton Faulkner 'Write It On Your...
Write It On Your Skin is Newton Faulkner’s third studio album and arrives five years after his million selling debut, but in many ways he still appears to be trying to re-create the winning formula that garnered him so much commercial success back in 2007.
This is not necessarily a bad thing as the results are pleasing, if somewhat safe and familiar. Songs like “Clouds”,...

Suzie Cracks The Whip is the 10th studio album released by Blues Traveler and coincides pleasingly with their 25th anniversary as a group. It finds them all in an upbeat mood, delivering a collection of songs that seem custom made for the summer.
It possesses a mainstream and pop sensibility when compared to the sprawling jams found in their earlier recordings, most markedly in the track ...

Album Review : The Smashing Pumpkins 'Oceania'
Oceania is the latest instalment in the ambitious 44 song cycle Teargarden By Kaleidyscope mooted by Billy Corgan back in 2009. Setting aside its grandiose origins, The Smashing Pumpkins have made an album which should please hardcore and casual fans alike.
Comprising of thirteen anthems spanning sixty odd minutes, it certainly leans towards the epic but somehow escapes feeling too overblown....
